A few easy hairstyles for school that kids and parents will love equally. Follow our inspirational guide for back-to-school hairstyles and discover the perfect hair styles for every day, along with essential accessories.

“Just be yourself; no need to be too neat. Sometimes messy is cool! Go for comfort too, as it has to last all day and no one wants a painful hairstyle!” says Sophie Moore, the hairstylist who works her magic on Meri Meri photo shoots. In addition to a selection of fun hair accessories, Sophie recommends an essential: “A detangling spray – a light leave-in conditioner that helps get all the tangles out without any bother.”

Classic Ponytails

The ponytail is a practical and stylish classic hairstyle that’s perfect for school. Here are three styles that are quick and easy:

High Ponytail: Sleek and polished for a smart, grown-up look.
Low Ponytail: Casual and effortless, perfect for busy mornings.
Bobble Ponytail: A fun new take on a classic.

How to jazz up the simple ponytail? “Grab a handful of small colored hair bands. Tie your ponytail as normal, then tie your colored bands a few inches apart all the way down the ponytail. Pull out each section slightly to make a fun bobble ponytail,” says Sophie.

Braided Styles

Braids, also known as plaits, are another school classic but require a little more skill. To do a simple braid, divide the hair into three sections, then cross the outer sections over the middle one by one until you reach the end. Secure with a hair tie or elastic band.

French Braid: A classic suits-all choice.
Dutch Braid: A bold, standout style that stays secure all day.
Fishtail Braid: Delicate and intricate, perfect for special days.

How to make more interesting braids?
“Try braiding in a colored ribbon for a flash of color. Or get some fun pompom hair bands for the bottom,” says Sophie.

Fun Updos

A fun, effortless style. To create a fun updo, start by gathering the hair into a ponytail, then twist sections and pin them around the base to form a messy bun. Add colorful hair accessories or a cute bow for a playful touch.

Half-Up Bun: A playful and easy style that works for any hair length.
Twisted Half-Up: Elegant twists add a touch of fun.
Braided Crown: A sweet and whimsical look for longer hair.

A quick, fun updo? “Section the hair down the middle and do two low plaits on each side, starting from behind the ear. Tie off at the bottom and bring each plait up to the top of the head. Pin in place with bobby pins and you’ve got yourself an easy boho crown braid!” says Sophie.

Short Hairstyles

Short hair for kids is not only practical but also super cute. A short bob can be sharp and straight or flicked out. Add a few hair clips for instant fun. Short hair is easy to manage, perfect for active kids and means kids can have fun with the styling. For teens, short hairstyles are a great way to express their individual style.

Short Bob: Think Dora the Explorer meets mini-Anna Wintour for everyday style, with or without bangs.
Pixie Cut: An adorable style, suitable for any age.
Short Layers: An on-trend style for teens that can be styled to suit their mood.

Top tip? “Head bands look great in short hair and can add a pop of color. And regular trims are a must for shorter cuts!” says Sophie.

Curly Hair

Curly hairstyles for kids are both cool and adorable. Natural curls can be enhanced with a bit of styling cream, and colorful hair accessories can add a playful touch. Curls can look great in a variety of styles, from bobs to updos and pixie cuts. With a little know-how, they’re easy to style before school.

Afro: Embrace the natural volume and texture of an Afro for a bold and beautiful look.
Curly Bob: A charming and effortless everyday style.
Curly Pixie: A playful and chic option that’s perfect for active kids.

Top tip? “Leave in conditioners are a must! Cantu products are great for curly and Afro hair. Try plaiting or tying up hair before bed to avoid tangles and mats in the morning.” says Sophie.

Boys’ Hair

Gone are the days when all boys had a short back and sides! These days, anything goes – long, short, messy waves, natural afros. The key to nailing school hairstyles for boys is all in the products, whether it’s a slick of gel or texturizing wax. Choosing the right brush or comb that won’t make them wince is also essential.

Textured Crop: A timeless style that works for boys of any age.
Messy Waves: A cute, nonchalant style favored by everyone from Harry Styles to Timothée Chalamet.
Crew Cut: A low-maintenance, stylish option that works for all ages.

Top tip? “Try salt spray for a beachy look. Easy to use on wet or dry hair and gives a great texture,” says Sophie.

With these back-to-school hairstyle ideas, kids (and you!) will be ready to face the new school year with confidence and style. Don’t forget to accessorize! Hairbands, clips, and Alice bands are all great tools in the back-to-school toolbox. Happy styling!
